Book #1 : The Last of the Firedrakes ( Personal Review)

Picture
Genre: Fantasy
Pages: 488
Rating: 5/5
THIS BOOK YOU GUYS. Yes if you've been following my blog you should know this is the first time I've given a book a full 5/5 star rating. This is good stuff, real good stuff.

For the Past year all I had ever read was Contemporary. I was head over heels and only craved YA Contemporary books and nothing more until I found this beauty and thought I would give it a shot. The First 2.-3 chapters of the book did not completely interest me but as soon as Aurora stepped through the Magical Tapestry on the wall. .  I was hooked. My mom had to literally grab the book away from me and force me to sleep or I swear I would've finished the book in one sitting *took me two sittings incase you wanted to know haha*.

Aurora, being only 16 years of age completely made me fall in love with her. . Her courage to take up whatever she was faced with and just as a really strong lead character in general. She did act like a 16 year old at times but then again that's what gave the book the realistic feeling. I also did get really attached to Kalen, the cute talkative fae and Rafe, The charmingly handsome "Black Wolf" *sigh rafe* ( I'm not going to say more since I don't want to spoil it for you, Your going to have to read the book yourself to find out ) were two other characters besides Aurora whose presence I thoroughly enjoyed throughout the book though they were not constantly present and did keep popping in and out of the story.

How could I not talk about the world building? The book transported me to a beautiful world of fantasy and mysticism . It possessed everything a fantasy book should have from the dangerous and beautiful creatures to the Magical School and so much wonderful magic which I myself alongside Aurora thoroughly enjoyed learning .

The plot was very well executed which is why I think although the book was nearly 500 pages it barely took me any time at all to finish it! Its something about Farahs writing that has me completely enticed and makes me lose track of time. This is a book I highly recommended and will be expecting twice as much from the second book in the series which I hope comes out soon and If not I know it will still be worth the wait !

Landline by Rainbow Rowell

Just what I needed! After binge reading the Burn for Burn trilogy by Jenny Han which revolved mainly around revenge I was longing for a love story , a short read and that's exactly what I got!

The story revolves around Georgie McCool a successful sitcom writer  ( IKR? what a cool name haha ) and Neal a stay home dad who is devoted to raising their daughters full-time. He isn't all that happy with Georgie's work and feels neglected . In the week before Christmas, Georgie and Seth (Georgie's best friend) get the chance to write the show they've always dreamed of — provided they turn in scripts during the 10 days Georgie's planning to be on holiday with her family . Georgie is left with no option but to stay in L . A while Neal and the girls leave to Omaha for Christmas where Neal's mother currently resides, This leaves Neal upset and as a result opens a rift in their marriage.

Georgie is capsized and even more so when Neal refuses to pick up her calls, she then goes to her mothers house to spend the evenings as she doesn't want to go back home - not without Neal there. Here's where the magic begins : Its not until she calls his family's house from the yellow rotary landline in her childhood bedroom that she finds out it connects her to a past Neal, a Neal from a parallel week in 1998, when the two spent time apart and almost broke up.

At first, she thinks shes going crazy and tries to avoid using the phone but slowly uses it to her advantage and does what every long-time lover dreams of doing : to go back to the beginning, and relive it all over again, with hindsight.

I love how Rowell is able to reach out to all ages despite this being a book aimed at adults. I also like how she didn't go with the cliche stay-home mom and working dad but flipped it over and that added a little of oomph to the book. The writing style as usual was very simple and easy to read which is why I guess I finished this book overnight. Comparing Landline to her other books this isn't her finest work. . . shes had better books my favorites being Eleanor and Park & Attachments keeping that aside I am eagerly looking forward to what more Rowell has to give in her upcoming books.

“Neal didn't take Georgie's breath away. Maybe the opposite. But that was okay--that was really good, actually, to be near someone who filled your lungs with air.”
                                  ―Landline, Rainbow Rowell.

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

As Cinder was , Scarlet too is a childhood classic retelling of red riding hood which was a hit during my time! The book follows Scarlet Benoit who is on the look out for her missing grandmother whom she assumes is kidnapped as she has no clue regarding her whereabouts. Her only hope to finding her grandmother is Wolf, a handsome young street fighter who she does not completely trust but is forced to as she is left with no other option. Meanwhile Cinder escapes prison and is on the run with Captain Carswell Thorne who she encounters whilst breaking her way out of the prison cell.

I personally enjoyed this book so much more than Cinder and flew threw it twice as fast I guess because of the added romance and continuous action between Scarlet and Wolf. Marissa has done an absolutely wonderful job balancing the two stories of Cinder and Scarlet together whilst bringing in other added characters and also paying attention to other minor details like the return of Iko
which if I must say made me really happy although not in his original form . . something was definitely better than nothing. Thorne who is an added character to the story I thought always kept me giggling. Cinder does not pay much attention to him despite Thorne trying to flirt a number of times with her but keeps her head on the tasks at hand as she has enough on her plate already.

I will surely be picking up the third book in the quartet, Cress which is based on Rapunzel and cannot wait to see how it adds to the two already existing plot lines.

"A relived grin filled Thrones face."We're having another moment, aren't we?"

"If by a moment, you mean me not wanting to strangle you since the first time we met, then i guess we are."

                          -Scarlet, Marissa Meyer.

Cinder By Marissa Meyer

Cinder is a fairy tale retelling of the old classic "Cinderella". From the time I picked this book I did have high expectations for it due to the never ending hype and everyone going "OMG YOU'VE NOT READ CINDER?" I knew then it was one I definitely had to read the only problem was: Id never read Sci-Fi and didn't think I'd like the genre as much, to my surprise Cinder kept the pages turning! It was so hard to put down I used to lose track of time all because it just took me to a whole new dimension and i liked it!

Cinder the protagonist in this story is a teenage cyborg – part human, part robot – who has no history about her parents and currently lives with her evil stepmother Audri and two step-sisters Peony and Pearl in New Beijing where a sickness called letumosis is lurking and no cure is to be found, the emperor sadly dies due to this plague and to make  things worse the evil and powerful lunar* queen, Levana, will stop at nothing in her plan to take over the earth. In the midst of all this Cinder meets Prince Kai (yes he's every girls dream) and just as their relationship as friends starts to build Cinders world shatters and takes a turn for the worse as she gets to know who she really is (and so does Kai, (nope he doesn't know she's a cyborg) and her foggy past starts getting cleared. How you may wonder? More like WHO. One Person. Dr Erland! The head of the letumosis research team who unveils a past Cinder never knew she had, she also becomes the talk of the town after attempting to save Prince Kai from the evil queen only to end up being her prisoner.

I loved how Marissa was able to retell this story and make it a whole lot more interesting with a lot of unexpected twists. The book left me wanting for more and as soon as I was done with it I went out and bought the second part. Her writing style was so easy to understand and I just whizzed through it all. I personally thought Cinder was a very strong character which brings me to the character development in the book which was done well except for a few characters like Kai where the character sketch was very limited. Overall it was a very fun read.. a lot of action and humor ~ If this world sounds like somewhere you might want to be definitely  go check this book out!

((Lunars** : People from the moon who have the ability to control peoples minds.))

Do your kind even know what love is? Can you feel anything at all? Or is it just programmed..?

Wonder by R.J Palacio

Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Pages: 313 + 92 ( The Julian Chapter)
Rating: 5/5
This book was just sheer brilliance! Palacio is to the point and straightforward about the whole topic and I think that's what drives readers to pick this book up. It opened my eyes and gave me a whole new insight about people like Auggie. In the book the protagonist, August Pullman, is like any other 10 Year old kid. He loves riding his bike and eating ice creams but despite 27 operations he can never be normal, its his face that sets him apart.

Things are tough for August and his family too. His protective big sister, Via feels angry when people stare and his parents love him yet cannot help but argue about whether August should go to school. Having Auggie be a normal kid just makes the story a whole lot more relatable, the challenges he faces of going through school, making new friends and just trying to fit in really gets you all teared up. Topics like these are never spoken about in books because of the sad and hard truths hidden in them.. But August is a boy who can't be a side story in his world, simply because of the way he looks.

Having the book being divided into viewpoints of many people was something new to me..The part I was most looking forward to though was "The Julian Chapter" which my edition of CORGI books did include. On completion of the book I did expect this chapter to make me feel sorry for Julian but went into the chapter not only to find out about Julian's side of the story but the most cutest and saddest love story narrated to Julian by his Grandmère ( Who by the way I thought was the most coolest person EVER!!!). The book also inspired Random House to start an anti-bullying campaign, called Choose Kind, with a site where people can share their experiences and sign a pledge to stamp out bullying.

"A Poweful read...Likely to become a huge hit with readers of all ages"

Finished this book in two sittings probably the most fast paced book I've ever read. My favorite character would definitely have to be Alyson/Lola cause she had two personalities and i liked how she switched between both. I also found the book very entertaining throughout and did not have to skip pages. I did think the whole book was going to be all happy and about Alyson and Willem and their cute love story to my surprise it wasn't. I did have to go through the whole painful process with Alyson thinking all was lost until the very end when she knocks on Willems door. I was screaming by the end and jumped off my couch to grab the second book Just One Year only to realize that it started of with the whole same story but from Willems point of view. Its going to be a painful process going through the whole year with Willem again, lets just hope it has a happy ending. I love happy endings.... i mean who doesn't?
